Xacti HD1a HD camcorder adds wide display, more
Sanyo on Thursday introduced the Xacti HD1a, a compact digital media camera that records both still pictures and digital video. It does it all onto an SD flash memory card. The Xacti HD1a is coming in September for $699.99. The Xacti HD1a records video in 720p and grabs 5.1 megapixel still images. Because it uses SD cards instead of bulky tapes or optical media, it's much more compact than other camcorders. It uses a 10x optical zoom lens and 2.2-inch LCD display. New features in the HD1a include a 16:9 widescreen still picture mode, in-camera video editing, a 30 frames-per-second 320 x 240 MPEG-4 pixel video recording mode called “Web-SHQ," optimized for the video iPod. The 16:9 still image mode grabs 3.8 megapixel images in the same wide-screen format as the Xacti HD1's digital videos.

After months of cryptic trailers and hype in the US, Cloverfield turns out to be almost comforting in its simplicity. It's a short, efficient, terrifying monster movie, no more and no less. Told solely from the point of view of one digital video camera wielded by one young guy named Hud (TJ Miller), the film records scenes from a seven-hour attack on Manhattan by a Giant Thing. It's the first cellphone-ready action flick. .
GDC to become invitation only for press in '09
It can be hard if you're a writer who isn't with one of the larger sites like IGN or one of the more popular blogs like Joystiq: E3's going invitation-only last year meant many gaming writers were scrambling for their golden ticket, and the show had a much different feel from previous E3s Ars has attended. Last year the Game Developers Conference picked up the slack in many ways, but with so many stories coming out of the GDC, and so many press members there, were the actual developers able to do their job without being harassed by the press? During our interview with GDC Executive Director Jamil Moledina, we asked this questions, among others. Moledina agreed that the press presence at GDC had been growing. "At GDC '07, there were around 1,000 press passes handed out, which for a 16,000-person show is quite a lot," he told Ars.
Tosh HD-DVD remote goes intergalactic
STAR TREK FANS with HD players are in for a geek treat this Christmas as Toshiba has revealed the details of its remote control shaped like a phaser gun. The remote will be available free to buyers of the HD-DVD release of the first Star Trek series, starring William 'the wig' Shatner, which is pretty neat considering it will sell standalone for $70. However, Star Trek fans without HD capability may be slightly cheesed off - the original series isn't being release on standard DVD, only on an HD-DVD / DVD 'combo' disc - with all the best extras being on the HD side of the disc. It seems that the HD-DVD camp is hoping that the sheer enthusiasm of Trekkies alone will see it through as the leader in HD formats this Chrimbo.
